So yesterday Courtney and I went to this class on the Bradley method which is supposed to help us prepare for labor. I figured that it would be several couples giving each other awkward massages with some acoustic accompaniment for an hour, and while I was partly right, there were a few surprises that I was not expecting.
One surprise came during a video we were watching on a little teeny 9" television. The video was showing microscopic views of the egg and sperm, and how after fertilization the cells began exponentially increasing, etc. In the background Bach's Overture No. 3 in D Major (specifically Air on the G String) was playing, which didn't quite sit right with me for some reason (baby-making is going on, and they're playing melodramatic Bach??). Anyway, all of this is really putting me to sleep: the music; the heat; the long, motionless scenes that reminds me of a 7th grade biology class that I never had.
Suddenly, in what turns out to be the last 20 seconds of what has previously been an informative video if you were a six-year-old who had never heard the word "vagina", the video switches to an action-packed close-up of a middle-aged chick spread-eagle giving birth to a hideous baby. The zoom is literally 6 inches away from the baby's head, and oddly enough Air on the G String is still playing through all of this. Yeah G String my A String that is NOT the right music for that type of business. The video suddenly cuts to credits, and I feel really weird inside.
While both Courtney and I thought the video was rather strange, the class made us excited about the upcoming labor and generally more comfortable, so it's definitely a worthwhile thing. I think that most of the learning comes from our out-of-classroom reading, but the class helps propel that.

I always enjoy hearing things from the husbands point of view!!
Are you going to try going natural Cece? That was my plan with Xander but things happened so fast I ended up with the epidural. With Mara I had to be induced. So we'll see what happens the next time around.
Oh my gosh that was a hilarious post Ben!!!! Thanks for that:)
I'm not sold on a natural birth, but each time my mom got an epidural her labor stopped. My plan is to hopefully use the techniques that I learn in this class to help the labor along as much as possible. Then if I need an epidural I have no problem with that. Of course, if I can do natural, more power!!
